On February 4, 2017, Powell River’s fierce and friendly hockey team, the Powell River Kings, united again with Vancouver Coastal Health to deliver an evening of tobacco-free fun at their game against the Cowichan Valley Capitals.
At their home turf aka the Hap Parker Arena, events and free stuff were enjoyed by the crowd during each intermission. There was a hilarious race to chuck as many containers of chewing tobacco into garbage cans as possible (it’s harder to do than you’d think, especially with so many people watching!) The mascot came rink-side to shoot prizes into the crowd, and there was also a draw to win even bigger prizes for those cool people who came by the Vancouver Coastal Health booth 😉
After the game, the Kings’s Tobacco-Free Ambassadors stopped by the booth to sign posters for a crowd of eager fans. Talk about dedication – these guys took the time to make sure their fans didn’t go home empty-handed even after a tough game.
Check back here to find out about other tobacco-free events happening with your favourite sports teams!
We have a couple of videos from the Powell River Kings game. Matt Scarth was on hand to sign posters and chat. He and his fans make some good points on why they made the call to not use tobacco.
Our favourite moment is when we asked why he chooses to be tobacco free; he tells us how it’s helped him to be in the plays and situations he loves best. You can tell he loves the game.
Exciting news – the Vancouver Canucks Hockey Organization has invited Your Call to be a part of game night on March 23! Come show your face at Rogers Arena when doors open at 5pm, or whenever you can get there. We will be at the Community Corner in the concourse until 8-8:30pm.
The Your Call Campaign is being featured at this game to introduce all Canucks fans (including you!) to its purpose of encouraging young people to get the facts about tobacco and make their own informed decision about it. That’s right – the organization behind the Canucks wants YOU to find out more about the campaign. They are even going to do a short interview with the campaign team, so come out to the game and watch for that on the jumbotron!
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that there will be lots of cool freebies available for you like hockey towels and sunglasses, on top of great resources for smoking cessation. If you’re feeling lucky, come by to enter the draw for awesome prizes!
You do not want to miss out on this event!!
Your Vancouver Giants will be playing what’s bound to be an exciting game on Friday, March 14 at the Pacific Coliseum (7:30 – 10:30pm) so come out to support them and learn more about their involvement with the Your Call Campaign! Athlete Ambassador Mason Geertsen will be delivering a message about the campaign, including an invitation to you to make your own call about tobacco use. You may have seen him featured on rink boards around town, but if not then you can be on the lookout for some of those now!
